Frequently Asked Questions
Can a dentist treat sleep apnea?
Yes, a dentist can address your sleep apnea symptoms. Dentists are qualified to practice sleep medicine, which consists of the diagnosis and treatment of sleep disorders. There are several symptoms of sleep apnea that affect your oral health, ones dental professionals can easily detect. Specialists like Dr. Lawrence can evaluate your mouth for more than signs of cavities or tooth decay, and is an expert in identifying signs of sleep disorders.
How does a dentist check for sleep apnea?
A prominent sign of sleep apnea is bruxism, or teeth grinding. Patients with sleep apnea may grind their teeth overnight without even realizing it. This can lead to enamel erosion and jaw pain, two areas of the mouth where dentists are trained to detect problems.
Sleep apnea can also cause a reduction in saliva production, leading to a dry throat and the risk for oral infections. If Dr. Lawrence notices gum inflammation or signs of dry mouth, he may order a sleep test to discover if these symptoms are sleep apnea related.
What should I ask a sleep dentist at my initial appointment?
When it comes to choosing a sleep apnea specialist, it helps to be informed of their qualifications and experience so you can ensure you’re making the best choice for your health.
Some questions to consider asking a sleep dentist include:
- How long have you been practicing sleep medicine?
- How many cases of sleep apnea have you successfully treated?
